Dear aeolian colleagues
Further to my recent message, the Board of ISAR invite you to register for the inaugural ISAR Virtuaeolian Seminar, given by Professor Doug Sherman, and chaired by Associate Professor Jean Ellis of the University of South Carolina.
Please register in advance for this event at: https://otago.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJMpdOCoqjgjHdJkbO9yPYLv01RKx5WYwy2u
After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting. The usual Zoom meeting etiquette will be followed - please join the seminar a few minutes before the start of the presentation and ensure you have muted your microphone. Questions can be submitted to the Chair using the ‘chat’ facility.
Deconstructing q: the empirical barriers. Professor Doug Sherman, The University of Alabama
Sherman, D. (2020) Understanding wind-blown sand: Six vexations (https://doi.org/10.1016/j.geomorph.2020.107193)
Abstract: We understand the fundamental controls on wind-blown sand transport rates for ideal or near ideal environments. Decades of experiments, however, have failed to bring us to agreement on the correct formulation of the relationship between those controls even with tightly constrained conditions, and this disagreement is a form of error. The focus of this presentation identifies several sources of such error associated with empiricism, including: measuring the threshold of motion; measuring moisture effects on the initiation of motion; measuring transport rates; and rationalizing wind tunnel studies with field studies. This is a familiar laundry list, but one worthy of another washing.

Feel free to forward this message to colleagues and students. Finally, we would be delighted to receive suggestions and volunteers for seminars later in the year and through 2021, including proposals from early-career researchers, research clusters and networks. We hope that this series will contribute to maintaining the networks and connections within our community while we deal with, and hopefully soon recover from, the pandemic.
Best wishes from myself and Dr Graziela Miot da Silva, Flinders University
